The Challenge

Miracle Recreation – one of the nation’s leading companies in designing and building innovative playgrounds – first retained Co-Communications for publicity and event support surrounding the donation of an all-inclusive playground to White House, TN, in April 2014. As a result of the success of the Tennessee project, the National Basketball Association (NBA) and its non-profit arm, NBA Cares, partnered with Miracle Recreation to refurbish the Hurricane Sandy-devastated Midland Beach Playground in Staten Island, NY. Miracle Recreation brought in Co-Communications once again, this time to tell the story of bringing play back to Midland Beach.

The Solution

Co-Communications worked in tandem with the NBA and NBA Cares’ communications teams to engage local, national and sports media around the philanthropic promise Miracle Recreation and the NBA were making to the community. Co-Communications also assisted in event planning, photography and videography to capture over 200 local students experiencing the state-of-art playground for the first time. The media campaign focused on Miracle Recreation’s efforts to restore the energy and excitement to a community that was still reeling from the shattering effects of Hurricane Sandy two years later.

The Results

Using Midland Beach’s recovery story and Miracle Recreation’s mission to bring play back to an area that missed it for so long as the ‘hooks,’ Co-Communications successfully secured stories in USA Today, New York Post, NBC News (local), CBS News (local), Fox News (local), About.com and additional local and trade online, print and broadcast outlets. Co-Communications also produced photography and videography for Miracle Recreation’s newest catalogue and sales presentations as part of the project. Miracle Recreation continues to bring active play to kids by donating playgrounds to communities in need, including plans to work with a small town outside of New Orleans, LA, in 2015.
